KUALA NERUS, May 17 (Bernama) -- Terengganu are targeting 70 golds in the Malaysia Games (Sukma) to be held in Kuala Lumpur from Sept 29 to Oct 8, which they believe is good enough for them to retain the overall champions title.

State Youth Development, Sports and Non-Governmental Organisations Committee chairman Wan Sukairi Wan Abdullah said this is a realistic target based on the current performances of Terengganu athletes, especially in sports which the state dominated at the last edition in Perak in 2018.

“Our main target is to emerge overall champions to retain the Sukma crown.

“Based on reports received, we are on the right track and InsyaAllah we can get 70 gold medals. If we achieve this target, we can retain the crown,” he told reporters here today after the presentation of incentives to 47 Terengganu athletes representing the country in the SEA Games.

He said Terengganu had appealed to the Youth and Sports Ministry to allow sprinter Azreen Nabila Alias to represent the state in the biennial Sukma.

The Sukma Supreme Committee had earlier barred the 22-year-old from competing in Sukma on grounds that she had represented the country at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Meanwhile, Wan Sukairi said Terengganu offers two incentive schemes for its athletes representing the country in the SEA Games - Insentif Skim Wakil Negara (SWARA) and Insentif Skim Hadiah Kemenangan (SHAKE).

"Under SWARA, every Terengganu athlete who competes in the SEA Games will receive RM1,000 cash while SHAKE incentives depend on the colour of the medals won," he said.

He said under SHAKE, an individual gold medallist will be rewarded RM4,000, silver medallist RM3,000 and bronze medallist RM2,000.

For team events, a gold medallist will get RM2,500, silver medallist RM2,000 and bronze medallist RM1,500.
